On the other hand is a look into the lives of many foreigners who traveled to Indian Ashrams looking for spiritual enlightenment. He bargains with his patrons over the littlest of things, is demanding of favours and privileges, and is not averse to making the other female dancers jealous simply to get his own way.
Matteo is seeking spiritual enlightenment, but for Sophie fulfillment lies in earthly love. Anita Desai is a brilliant writer but this novel is not her best. No trivia or quizzes yet. It is full of rambling prose, and uninteresting characters, in a very boring, uneventful plot.

Young and in love, Sophie and Matteo share a dissatisfaction with their bourgeois upbringing and a yearning for spiritual fulfillment that brings them, like so many others, to India.

When I read about the early s when we had the west leaking into the east in search of spiritual enlightenment it guts me, because it is so ridiculous and convenient- to house a notion of something that cannot be explained, proved, or intellectually discussed.
In telling what happens to Matteo and Sophie and the mother, Anita Desai gives us a novel of great richness, an extraordinary vision of a country, and a compassionate portrait of people struggling to find a spiritual home.

I don’t remember much of this book but the setting was haunting and the idea of seeking spiritualism was inspiring and groundbreaking. However Matteo performed very poorly: The individuals in the three novellas who make up this collection nurture their creativity in different ways — whether it is in setting up a museum of randomly collected objects, being a little known writer in a regional language, or even creating a secret garden — in the hope of finding happiness, one that does not have to be explained to anyone.

In her first novel since the widely praised Baumgartner’s Bombay, Anita Desai brilliantly evokes spiritual India in all its endless complexity, and examines the nature of pilgrimage through the aspirations and adventures of three superbly realized characters.
